Taking Away Layers | The Verge
Just saw this on The Verge. An artist named Laurin Dopfner took layers off of items with an industrial sander and recorded it using motion capture.

Aside from just how painstaking that process had to be, and I kind of want to see a video about that, layers really are awesome.
What I enjoyed most was how he put the images in to reverse and showed the reassembly of the items he sanded down. To me it was most interesting on the organic objects like the skull and the tree. In a weird way it was like watching a re-birth.
